Dr Beer reunited with Spotty the dog

Spotty the three-legged dog has been joyfully reunited with EberVet CEO Dr Hilldidge Beer three months after she performed emergency surgery on him. Dr Beer was recently in Prince Albert in the Karoo conducting sterilisation clinics for underprivileged animals when she met up with her old patient Spotty.

Three months ago Dr Beer offered free emergency surgery to Spotty after he was knocked down by a car. There is no vet in Prince Albert and animal welfare volunteers drove Spotty to Somerset West to Dr Beer’s Country Animal Clinic in Scholtz Road. Spotty’s leg was very badly damaged and had to be amputated. He went home a week later.

On her recent visit to Prince Albert, Dr Beer popped in to visit Spotty. Their story made headlines in this week’s issue of the District Mail.

“I was elated to see that he is so mobile, coping so well with just his three legs,” said Dr Beer.

“Amputating a front leg is more of a disability for a dog than a hind leg because dogs naturally take more of their body weight on their front legs but Spotty was racing around his yard when I arrived and he jumped straight into my lap.

“He is obviously very happy to be home and is being very well taken care of by his owner Boet Claassen.”

Mr Claassen said when Spotty was driven to Somerset West he never expected to see him again. “His leg was so bad I thought they would have to put him down but look at him now. He is the old Spotty. He still chases anything with wheels. I am so grateful to Dr Beer for her help and for bringing my Spotty back to me.”
