Jack Russell finds happy, new home

Jack Russells have a way of creeping into a dog lover’s heart so it was no surprise that when Nadine Janse van Rensburg’s precious Timmy went missing, she was frantic.

Nadine, who lives in Ladismith in the Klein Karoo, searched high and low for her pup but to no avail.  She walked the streets of her town searching for him, put up posters and alerted welfare organisations.

Then someone mentioned they’d seen a man walking a Jack Russell on a piece of rope. It was 8pm but Nadine followed the lead and came upon a very inebriated man dragging this frightened and very skinny dog along.

“It wasn’t my dog but there was no way I was going to leave that poor animal. I had to persuade the man to hand her over.” Nadine took the terrified little girl home. “She’s only about a year old but after a couple of days we noticed she was getting a big tummy. She was pregnant!”

The dog, now named Lilla, had five healthy puppies and Nadine found good homes for them all. Lilla is happily settled with her new mom, has been sterilised and is thriving, and Nadine has become a volunteer for the Karoo Animal Protection Society (KAPS).

“My mom and I knitted winter coats for the township dogs and took them food as there are so many thin and neglected animals. Then someone suggested I get in touch with KAPS and here I am, a volunteer and loving it.”.
