Mandela Day pet sterilisation clinic

Jul 26, 2016 | COMMUNITY VETERINARY CARE, IN THE NEWS

Pets from impoverished homes came in their droves to EberVet Petcare Group’s free animal sterilisation clinic on Mandela Day.

We spayed and neutered 40 animals; vaccinated over 100; handed out 350kg of cat and dog food; and gave out more than 130 blankets, treats, beds, bowls and leads and collars. Many of these pets live in squalid conditions in informal settlements. They are without good nutrition or warm shelter.

Working with our animal welfare friends Dawie and Yolanda Hamman from Pet Pals and the extraordinary Colleen Pienaar, we had more than 200 pet owners queuing from early morning. Colleen not only sourced most of the animals, she also donated the old Sir Lowry’s Pass  hotel as a venue.

People queued for hours with their pets

This is the first time a sterilisation clinic has been held in this area in a long time. The need is obviously huge. Informal settlements here are jam-packed with unspayed bitches, many of whom have had multiple litters of pups, and many pitbulls – from puppies to large, unneutered males. By the end of the day, many of these pitbulls were either sterilised or added to a waiting list for the next clinic.

There were lots of pitbull pups signed up for future sterilisation

We are enormously grateful to our fantastically generous Vetshops clients and our suppliers for donating the food, leads and collars, blankets, treats and bowls. Every pet owner went home with a parcel for their cat or dog.

Thank you also to the welfare organisations, their amazing volunteers and our own team for the huge effort that went into making this day such a wonderful success.

EberVet Petcare Group is dedicated to welfare sterilisation and we perform around 1000 free pet steris a year in the Overberg, Helderberg and Karoo Community
