This week our CEO Dr Hilldidge Beer was in the Little Karoo sterilising cats and dogs from underprivileged homes at no cost to their owners.
Dr Beer’s Community Veterinary Care (CVC) programme works with animal welfare organisations like the Karoo Animal Protection Society (KAPS) and Prince Albert Animal Welfare/Dieresorg (PADS) in towns where there are no resident vets and high rates of unemployment so pet owners struggle to care for their animals. Dr Beer and colleagues devote their services here for free, sterilising as many cats and dogs as they can over several days.
Fewer than 10% of pets in South Africa have access to sterilisation, and 70% of all companion animals have no access to healthcare at all. Sterilised pets have stronger immunity, and can survive on less food.
CVC is endorsed by the SA Veterinary Association and Dr Beer travels to towns in both the Great and Little Karoo, and operates in poor communities in the Helderberg and Overberg too.
