Animals from disadvantaged communities have it tough. Poor nutrition, inadequate shelter and usually too many puppies and kittens because their owners cannot afford to properly care for them.
That’s why vets like EberVet CEO Dr Hilldidge Beer take time away from their busy practices to help these animals lead healthier, happier lives. Dr Beer, and a handful of veterinary colleagues, devote many weeks each year to animal sterilisation clinics in small towns across the Karoo where veterinary services are either non-existent or very limited.
“Every animal I sterilise I know for sure will have a better chance of living a better life. They put on weight, they stop being aggressive and getting into fights, there are far fewer unwanted litters and the males don’t get scorched with boiling water because they chase after bitches on heat. That is good enough for me,” Dr Beer says. “Winston Churchill said: ‘We make a living from what we get , but we make a life from what we give'”.
