Groomers offer multiple benefits

Pet groomers at Country Pet Spa offer so much more than simply returning your dog or cat clean and knot-free. Our groomers are professionally trained to spot ailments and illnesses even you, the owner, may not see. And we have the added advantage of being right next door to a veterinary clinic, so you’re assured your pet is in the best hands at all times.

Our pet groomers have vets on call

Monica Swarts has been with us for 13 years, several of those as an assistant in our veterinary hospital so she has a sound knowledge of dogs and cats.

“When a client arrives, we immediately give him or her a ‘snout to tail’ examination to look for problems like lumps and bumps, abscesses, torn nails or skin irritations,” says Monica. And many have been found.https://www.ebervet.com/lumps-and-bumps-…d-not-be-ignored/

“We have picked up skin ailments like dandruff and even a growth on a tongue,” says Christine Steenbok, who has worked with us for more than 10 years. At Country Pet Spa, pets’ teeth are also checked, and anal glands secreted should this be necessary.

If dental or any other potential ailments are detected by Christine and Monica, they will alert a nurse or vet at the clinic who will then examine the pet and discuss the issue with the pet’s owner. Because some pets find spa visits stressful, sedation may be recommended when needed. This is performed by the clinic’s vet nurse or a veterinarian who will then keep a close eye on the animal until it is awake and ready to go home.

Cat grooming

Cat grooming is becoming more and more popular with owners of long-haired cats like Persians and Maine Coons, and with those whose pets are in their senior years. “We gently tease out the knots which are sometimes so bad on the cat they pull painfully on the skin, causing severe skin irritation,” Monica says. “The cat suffers terribly. We need to get those knots out so that the cat is comfortable again.”

Senior cats are known to stop grooming as fastidiously as they did in their youth and bringing them to a pet spa is an easy way to keep them clean. “We treat the seniors very gently,” assures Monica.

“Some pets won’t allow their owners to apply tick or flea medication but they’re good as gold when they come here so we can do it for them.”

Many dental issues are also identified by our groomers. “We even found a cat with a large growth on its tongue which the owner didn’t even know was there. The growth was later removed by a vet,” Christine says. Growths and lumps may be benign, but they could also be cancerous and the sooner they are removed, the more successful the treatment.

When you walk into Country Pet Spa you’ll hear the gentle voices of our groomers singing to their charges. The animals love it.
